What is Space Studies?
Space studies is an interdisciplinary academic field that draws from astronomy, planetary science, and engineering. Students gain a broad overview of the space environment, space policy and law, and spaceflight. Additionally, learners discuss technological systems that make space exploration possible.
Our space studies program integrates these subject areas to deliver fundamental knowledge of the universe and humankind’s role within it. As we enter the next era of space exploration, AMU students consider how space research influences life on Earth. Our space studies curriculum deepens students’ understanding of aerospace science, our nation’s space program, and global initiatives in space.
This online associate degree program is intended for students interested in exploring space-related research. Learners will discuss the wonders of the universe as they study planetary science, astronomy, geology, and space flight.
Why Pursue a Degree in Space Studies at American Military University?
AMU offers a welcoming online learning environment to students from all walks of life, including current and former military members. Our space studies program engages learners in discussions about the planets, stars, and other celestial bodies within the Milky Way. Students learn how to conduct research and interpret data to gather insights on our solar system and the greater universe.
Learners also delve into the history of aviation as it relates to human activity in space. Coursework provides an overview of the advancement of rocketry, from the early days of satellite technology to modern human space flight. Moreover, students consider how human exploration beyond Earth’s orbit has contributed to advances in technology in space.
Additionally, this associate degree program equips learners with an understanding of astronomy. Students become familiar with the structures and properties of galaxies, stars, and the universe. Class discussions and coursework examine how astronomers collect and analyze data to decode light.
Students will also learn about geology, weather, and meteorology to understand how planets are formed and the factors that influence atmospheric conditions. Courses shed light on how volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides contribute to planetary structure. Furthermore, students review the methods professional meteorologists use for everything from forecasting local weather to assessing natural disasters.
Graduates of AMU’s associate degree program have working knowledge of aerospace science, space policy, and the latest developments within the space industry. This program helps lay the groundwork for further studies as well. Learners may choose to continue their education online at AMU through our space studies bachelor’s degree program.
Explore Our Universe Through AMU’s Space Studies Research Groups
Beyond this degree program, AMU offers space studies students many opportunities to engage in scholarly research through university-sponsored programs. AMU’s Wallace E. Boston Observatory houses a research-grade PlaneWave telescope with a 24-inch mirror and remote-control access. Students who participate in extracurricular research groups may analyze images from the Observatory to study asteroids, stars, and planets beyond our solar system.
AMU’s Exoplanet Research Program, for example, uses telescopic images from the University Observatory and other databases to study exoplanet transits and the properties of exoplanets. Additional research opportunities include our University’s specialized projects, such as Variable Star Research, and the Supernova Search Program.
Courses and labs also integrate the NASA Exoplanet Database, a comprehensive public record of planets outside our solar system.
Connect with the Space Community Through SESA
Once a year, space enthusiasts and stargazers gather at our annual Space Education and Strategic Applications (SESA) conference. Sponsored by the Policy Studies Organization (PSO) and the American Public University System (APUS), this virtual event brings students together with the larger space community. Researchers, educators, and other leaders within the space industry discuss current trends and the latest findings in space science.
“The space field is broad, encompassing almost any field you can imagine, from scientists to lawyers, journalists to engineers, medical experts to business professionals, agriculturists to pilots,” says AMU Space Studies Professor Dr. Kristen Miller, who helps to organize the event. “It's exciting to participate with this rapidly expanding space community through the SESA Conference and to contribute to humanity's progress towards becoming a multi-planet species.”
The SESA conference offers complimentary admission for AMU students and faculty and features a poster-viewing session where students can present and discuss their research findings. SESA also releases a peer-reviewed, open-access publication, the SESA Journal, in collaboration with PSO and APUS. Space studies students may submit original manuscripts for consideration in the SESA Journal’s student scholarship program.
Experience Space Exploration Simulations with AARG
Students who join AARG, the Analog Astronaut Research Group, can participate in simulated “analog missions” to understand how space scientists conduct their research.
Participants work together as an analog astronaut crew and travel to various locations, or “habitats,” that replicate living conditions in space. Crews are then isolated in specially constructed facilities, where they experience firsthand how astronauts live, work, and conduct experiments.

Pursue Your Associate Degree Through AMU’s Military-Friendly Online Program
Military life is unpredictable. AMU offers this space studies program online so you may pursue your degree, no matter where your duties take you. Our flexible, online courses accommodate active-duty servicemembers in all branches of the military.
Classes start monthly and have no set login times. Space studies students complete weekly assignments as they participate in discussion forums with classmates and instructors. Course materials are also accessible online 24/7.

Founded in 1991 by a retired U.S. Marine, AMU offers online programs for active-duty servicemembers, as well as veterans, military families, and non-military students. As an institution committed to its students, AMU provides learners with a wide range of benefits and support services.

In partnership with Uwill and TalkCampus, we offer students 24/7 access to mental-health support services in more than two dozen languages. Our University Chaplains provide special assistance to servicemembers experiencing PTSD as well.
Additionally, AMU provides military families with educational support and career services through the Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP). MSEP is a recruitment and employment service that connects military spouses with hundreds of companies, including non-profit organizations.

We aim to make this associate of science degree more attainable by minimizing education costs. Our online program allows you to save on expenses associated with traditional, on-campus learning, such as room and board or commuting costs. In addition, AMU offers a Preferred Military Rate to servicemembers and their families.*
* All U.S. active-duty servicemembers, National Guard members, Reservists, and military families (parents, spouses, legal partners, siblings, and dependents) are eligible for the Preferred Military Rate of $250/credit for undergraduate and master’s-level courses. The Preferred Military Rate, which is applied automatically, supersedes all other university grants and special rates, and cannot be combined with any other special promotions. Please note that a technology fee applies to master’s-level courses.

Apply Transfer Credits Toward This Associate of Science Degree Program
Transferring credits towards this degree program allows students to save time and money on their studies. Students may receive transfer credits for any of the following:
- Previously Earned Academic Credit: Qualifying students may receive transfer credits for previously completed coursework at accredited higher learning institutions.
- Government Training: We have agreements with various government agencies and affiliations.
- Military Service & Education: Students may transfer many forms of professional military education, non-academic experience, and training.
- Professional Training & Certification: We will consider various training courses, certifications, and institutes for potential transfer credit.
- AMU’s Prior Learning Assessment (PLA): Enroll in PLA to determine if you can receive academic credit for knowledge achieved outside of college.
- Public Safety Training: AMU has agreements with different federal, state, local, and civilian occupations and training programs that may allow you to transfer credits.
